Purple Pillow Review 2022: Comfortable To Use?

Purple began selling mattresses in 2015, and since then, it has steadily increased the variety of mattresses, sheets, and pillows it offers. Its flagship model, the Purple Pillow, uses the Purple Grid, which is a unique material also used in the Purple Mattress.

We’ll go into detail about the company’s flagship Purple Pillow, to provide all information you want to know. Keep reading!

Who Is Purple Pillow For?

Who Might Like The Purple Pillow

  • Hot sleepers
  • People who are looking for a durable pillow

Who Might Not Like The Purple Pillow

  • Stomach sleepers
  • Those who are on a budget
  • People who prefer the feeling of a traditional pillow

Purple Pillow Construction And Design

Before we go over the exact construction in our Purple pillow review, we have to point out that it weighs in at a whopping 10 lbs. This is the heaviest pillow that we reviewed to date and, to be candid, it’s too heavy. The pillow has an uncompressed loft of about 3.25″, but when you lay your head on it, the loft drops to about 2.75″.

The pillow itself is made of a proprietary, gel-like material called Hyper-Elastic Polymer. This is present on every Purple mattress, and it is the main factor driving the company’s massive consumer base.

Hyper-Elastic Polymer has a number of advantages and disadvantages:

  • It is responsive and makes switching sleeping positions very easy at night.
  • It also has a slinky, malleable feel to it, which makes moving the pillow around very difficult.
  • It also requires no fluffing, which means that all through the night, Purple Pillow keeps its height and shape. When promoting this pillow, Purple relies heavily on this as one of their main marketing arguments. It is a sturdy pillow with a good balance of support and pressure relief.

As you can see in the picture below, the Hyper-Elastic Polymer substance is also arranged in a grid format. This facilitates airflow, which will be covered in more detail shortly.

The Purple Pillow is a single-sided pillow, meaning you are not supposed to flip it. You can remove the pillow to wash the cover using the zippers on the bottom (more on this in the FAQ section below).

The pillow’s powder-coated Hyper-Elastic Polymer material is another noteworthy feature. According to Purple, this is completely safe and non-toxic. It’s written about on Purple’s blog. I don’t want to make a big deal out of this since it’s apparently entirely benign, but it just makes a mess if you do remove the cover. However, having to clean up the powder bothered us a little, even though we are not worried about it in terms of health.

Again, according to Purple, the powder is completely safe, but it makes a mess. The lesson of the story is to move the Purple Pillow outside before washing the cover.

Purple Pillow Sleeping Styles

Back Sleeping

We think back sleeping is the most optimal position for the In fact, back sleepers are highlighted in particular in the majority of the graphics on Purple’s website.

Although this is undoubtedly the most ideal position for the pillow, there is a chance that some heavier sleepers won’t find it tall enough for back sleeping.

Side Sleepers

For side sleepers, the Purple Pillow is a possibility, but not a sure thing. For small side sleepers, we believe it will be nice, but if you have a medium or large frame, you might want to think about getting one of the boosters to increase the loft.

Matt, a member of the Slumber Yard team, claimed that the Purple Pillow was simply too thin for him to sleep on his side while it was missing the boosters. For comparison, Matt is 190 lb and stands at 6’0″ Prime.

Stomach Sleepers

We feel pretty confident in saying that the original Purple Pillow is not designed for stomach sleepers. If you don’t have a big frame, the pillow doesn’t compress enough for stomach sleeping to be comfortable. The pillow doesn’t quite flatten enough for medium-sized and small people, which causes your neck to kink.

In general, we’d advise you to hug the pillow’s edges if you’re determined to sleep on your stomach, but in this situation, you don’t really have that choice. The pillow’s outer edges are strengthened and provide even less compression.

Purple began selling mattresses in 2015 and has since added a variety of mattresses, sheets, and pillows to its selection. Its flagship model, the Purple Pillow, incorporates the Purple Grid, a unique material also used in the Purple Mattress.

The Purple Pillow has a core made of the Purple Grid and two detachable foam boosters that allow you to change the loft and feel of the pillow. The Purple Pillow excels in terms of comfort, sturdiness, and temperature control thanks to this combination of materials.

Purple’s pillow offerings include three models in addition to the flagship Purple Pillow:

The Purple Harmony Pillow, is a luxury design that has a core of bouncy Between layers of the Purple Grid, Talalay latex is sandwiched.

The Purple Plush Pillow, which is filled with interlocking balls of polyester and can be adjusted to have a firmer or fluffier feel.

The Kid Purple Pillow, which, like the standard, The Purple Grid is the basis for Purple Pillow, which is the Purple Grid scaled down to be more child-friendly.

To improve temperature regulation, the covers of all the pillow options are made with breathable materials. Although many Purple pillows can have their loft changed, there is only one length and width option available for each model.

By dissecting the flagship Purple Pillow’s design, cost, performance, and how well it accommodates various sleeper types, we’ll concentrate on this pillow’s key features.

Purple Pillow Review Breakdown

For those seeking the distinctive feel offered by the Purple Grid, the Purple Pillow is a desirable alternative. This substance, referred to as a hyperelastic polymer, reacts to the weight of your head and neck and quickly snaps back into place when that weight is removed.

The Purple Grid is a good option for side and back sleepers who require more support from their pillow to maintain a comfortable neck angle because of its capacity to adapt to pressure.

It’s simpler to find the Purple Pillow’s ideal height and feel for your needs thanks to the Purple Pillow’s two detachable polyfoam boosters. The Purple Grid adapts to the shapes of your head and neck to better fit your body.

The Purple Pillow’s capacity to keep cool is another advantage. The Purple Grid’s airflow is smooth. Combining this ventilation with a stretchy, breathable cover prevents heat buildup.

We’ll go into great detail about Purple’s signature pillow, but we’ll also give you details about some of its other pillow models so you can compare them more effectively.

Pricing Information Of Purple Pillow

Although there is a wide price range available on the pillow market, the majority of pillows cost between $20 and $200. The loft, the interior’s construction, the materials used for the cover, and other features and design elements all have different prices. Superior materials or a more intricate and intricate design are usually found in more expensive pillows.

Purple offers pillows at reasonable prices. The standard Purple Pillow is less expensive than the plush Purple Harmony Pillow. The Purple Plush Pillow, which has polyester fill, is less expensive than either of these pillows because they both contain the unique Purple Grid material.

Because of its smaller size, the Kid Purple Pillow is less expensive and uses the Purple Grid.

Two detachable boosters are included in the cost of the Purple Pillow. For a fee, extra boosters can be purchased separately.

Purple Pillow Performance Ratings

When searching for a new pillow, performance is a vital consideration. The key performance factors that can help you decide whether a pillow is a right fit for you include how well it supports your head and neck, whether it stays cool, and how long it lasts.

The Purple Pillow stands out in a number of categories as a result of its design and materials. It maintains its loft without constant fluffing and holds its shape remarkably well. It resists heat accumulation, making it an excellent option for those who want to keep their head cool at night. Because of its solid construction, the Purple Grid offers durability and consistently delivers high levels of performance.

You can get comfortable without feeling engulfed by the pillow thanks to the Purple Grid’s ability to effectively conform to your head and neck without creating too much sink. Due to its support, maintaining a straight neck and spine is made simpler.

The Purple Pillow’s performance ratings, which differ from those of the other Purple pillow options, will be broken down.

Durability

The Purple Grid, which is designed to last, is 3 inches thick in this pillow, providing a sturdy core that prevents sagging or sinking. The polyfoam boosters provide additional padding and minimize wear and tear. The cover’s stretchy material safeguards the fill and prevents tearing and pilling.

Firmness Options

The medium firm, 3-inch Purple Grid in the Purple Pillow is not adjustable. To change the firmness, however, one or both of the polyfoam boosters that are already present can be added or removed by opening the pillow cover.

Shape Retention

Excellent shape retention is a quality of all the Purple Pillow’s materials. The Purple Grid is strong and quickly returns to its original shape after lightly compressing to cushion your head. The dense material used to create the polyfoam boosters helps them maintain their shape. As a result, you won’t often need to fluff this pillow or be concerned that its shape will be altered.

Moldability

The Purple Grid’s adaptability and flexibility enable you to alter its shape as needed to suit your requirements. This moldability is a benefit for the Purple Pillow because it enables you to take advantage of the unique properties of the hyper-elastic polymer used in Purple.

Conforming

The materials of the Purple Pillow, in particular the Purple Grid, can respond to the weight of your head and neck, gently cradling them to ensure that they receive the support they require. But the Purple Grid’s density and the boosters’ protection from sinking or too much hugging.

Temperature Control

To keep a pillow cool, airflow is essential, and the Purple Grid generously provides space for this cooling ventilation. Further breathability is made possible by the cover, which also helps the Purple Pillow avoid overheating at night.

Odor Potential

Once the Purple Pillow is taken out of its packaging, most people will smell it. The polyfoam boosters and the Purple Grid both have a mild chemical smell that might be easier to notice when your head is on the pillow. The airflow through the pillow usually gets rid of this smell over the course of a few days, though.

Which Purple Pillow Is Best?

  • The original Purple Pillow is made from the same material as the Purple mattress with excellent conformity and a neutral temperature. The best option for back sleepers who require more neck support is still the original Purple Pillow.
  • The Purple Plush Pillow is a different case altogether, as it is filled with a polyester down-like material that makes the pillow more traditional. Along with having two zippers, the Purple Plush Pillow also has a loft adjustment feature that lets users choose whether they want the pillow to be firm or soft. Last but not least, we believe it to be the most accommodating choice because it is the most affordable.
  • The Harmony Purple Pillow falls somewhere between the two in terms of support and is best for those looking for a luxury, breathable sleeping experience. It includes an additional Talalay latex support layer in addition to the revolutionary Hyper-Elastic Polymer from the Purple mattress.

With a price tag of around $49, the Purple Plush is unquestionably the least expensive of the three. At $159, the Harmony Purple Pillow is more than three times as expensive, while the original Purple Pillow is the middle option at $109.

Is Purple Pillow Worth Buying?

For some people, buying Purple Pillows will be a wise investment. I personally couldn’t even sleep on them, so I would never purchase one. They were just too firm and thick for my slender shoulders. But Kyle and Dylan, for example, love the pillows because of the same qualities I find objectionable.

Even though some people may enjoy Purple’s pillows, I keep going back to the other pillows we tested because I find them to be more adaptable and appealing. For instance, the Coop Pillows that we adored have shredded foam that can be removed by the handful until you have the right amount. Purple made an effort to implement some customization, but it was insufficient. In my testing, the Purple pillows’ inability to “fall flat” or compress is what ultimately made them, er, fall flat for me.

The Purple Harmony or Purple Pillow might be ideal if you want to firm up your pillow. Although it was difficult for me to transition from cushy down to these pillows if you have already switched to dense, firm foam pillows and enjoy the experience, go for it. I wouldn’t advise doing so, as it would be uncomfortable.

Purple offers a generous return policy, similar to other sleep companies, giving you a trial period to try it out. If you’re unhappy, you have 100 days from the delivery date to get in touch with the business and ask for a return; however, the business advises using the pillow for at least 30 nights to give your body time to adjust. This might be accurate for the Purple Pillow, whose height can be adjusted. However, you’ll probably be able to tell fairly quickly if the pillow is going to work for you if you choose one of the company’s non-adjustable options; I know I did.

Our Verdict

We firmly believe that the Purple Pillow is a worthwhile investment if you’re a larger person looking for substantial neck support. It’s fluffy and comfy, and we love all the customization options for different firmness levels and airflow. We believe that almost any type of sleeper will be able to find comfort and have their spine properly supported because you can customize the firmness level.

Aside from that, we’re actually quite surprised and impressed by the price. If you’re looking for a good pillow, this is it, in our opinion.
